Biswajit, Smaraki bag State Junior chess titles

Khurda boy Biswajit Nayak Kendrapara girl and Smaraki Mohanty won titles in the Orissa State Junior (u-19) Chess Championship, which concluded at Town Hall, Boudh today. Biswajit beat Swastik Sahoo in the seventh and final round to top the table with 6.5 points. Smaraki finished with full five points, outplaying Anwesha Sahoo in the fifth and final round. The title winners received a cash prize of Rs 1,250 each.

Altogether 54 players, including 11 girls from 10 districts, joined the three-day tournament, which was hosted by Boudh District Chess Association, under the aegis of All Orissa Chess Association. Top four finishers in each category qualified to represent the state in the Junior National Chess Championship, scheduled to be held at Margao (Goa) from September 5 to 14.

Boys: 1. Biswajit Nayak (6.5), 2. Rakesh Kumar Jena (6), 3. Bhaskar Sri Viswaroopanand (5.5), 4-8. Partha Sarathi Satpathy, Swastik Sahoo, Chandan Kumar Meher, Anshuman Satapathy, Ashirwad Swain (5 each), 9-10. Baivab Mishra,  Ansuman Samal (4.5 each).

Girls: 1. Smaraki Mohanty (5), 2. Sradhanjali Jena (4), 3-6. Anwesha Sahoo, Madahasa Jani, Jyotshna Ghadei, Fiza Afrin (3 each), 7-8. Rasmita Pradhan, Sabitri Parida (2.5 each), 9. Pragyanshree Padhi (2), 10. Ruchira Mahakud (1).
